Organization
Stepping Stones Project
Berkeley, California, US
We provide long term group mentoring and rites of passage for 11 – 15 year olds in the San Francisco Bay Area, aiming to initiate youth into healthy relationships with self, culture and nature. Groups of 8 same-gender youth meet with two leaders and an elder twice a month for 2-3 years, along with quarterly backcountry day-longs and summer wilderness trips each year, culminating in a Marking Ceremony. Our work is informed by the work of Bill Plotkin, Michael Meade, Gordon Neufeld and Rachel Kessler. In addition, we weave village among, and support the growth of, our group leaders, parents and elders; it’s increasingly an intergenerational project and village.
