Rituals and Community Regeneration
Paul Hill Jr. of the National Rites of Passage Institute.
In 1992 Paul wrote a book, Coming of Age: African American Male Rites-of-Passage. The book was based on his field of study and applications. Since 1992 he has published several articles in peer-review journals on rites of passage as a process for human development. Paul’s interest as a student and practitioner in rite of passage for youth development and community building began in the late 70’s. In 1993 he established the National Rites of Passage Institute. The purpose of the Institute is to create a critical mass and community of adults to develop children and youth and regenerate community through rites of passage. He has always operated from the premise that there is not a youth problem in America; there is an adult problem. Youth do not develop in a vacuum. Since 1993, the Institute has provided training to 1000 plus men and women from 20 cities, the District of Columbia and Toronto, Canada; they have been actively involved in guiding and supporting a minimum of 10,000 children and youth in neighborhood and community-based programs.
The Mask You Live In
the Representation Project
The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s limited definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer groups, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men.
Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the “boy crisis” and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

Rites of Passage: Mentoring the Future
Frederick Marx of Warrior Films
The villages are burning. Worldwide. An estimated $500 billion is spent yearly on teen dysfunctions in the U.S. alone: drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy and STDs, school dropouts and expulsions, gang and property crimes, traffic accidents, ADD, ADHD, depression, and violence… Culturally appropriate rites of passage and mentorship programs could help solve all these problems! It could be the silver bullet for youth development.
Lost Borders: Coming of Age in the Wilderness
School of Lost Borders
Nine youths perform a ten-day initiation ceremony, the heart of which is a three days and nights solo fast in the high desert of eastern California (otherwise known as a vision quest). With a powerful resolve to enter adulthood, the initiates attempt to come to terms with death, torn families and the deep frustration of adolescence.

An Exploration of Coming of Age Rituals & Rites of Passage in a Modern Era
Ron Fritz
Ron Fritz discusses his family’s journey to create meaningful coming of age events for their three children and shows how you can create a similar rite of passage for a child in your life – whether it’s a son, daughter, niece, nephew, grandchild or friend. These important rites of passage help young teens understand what it means to become an adult by teaching life skills and reinforcing character traits and values. Our children need guidance through this difficult and confusing transition and Fritz describes how bringing a community together to mark this coming of age moment can make a positive impact in a young person’s life.
